SWG-2016-00038 - Port of Brownsville - Brazos Island Harbor (BIH)

Published March 24, 2016
Expiration date: 4/25/2016

Full Public Notice     Project Plans

The applicant proposes to deepen the BIH from the authorized depth of -42 feet below mean lower low water (MLLW) to a depth of -52 feet below MLLW.  The BIH entrance channel and Jetty Channel are proposed to be deepened to -54 feet below MLLW.  No channel widening is proposed.  Where necessary, the top cut of the channel may be extended, or varied, in order to maintain the current channel side slopes.  Dredging is proposed to be conducted using a cutter head dredge or hopper dredge.

Dredged material is proposed to be placed into designated upland confined dredge material placement areas (DMPAs) 2, 3, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, 7 and/or 8; the New Work ODMDS; and placed for beneficial use to promote beach renourishment, by placing material onto a feeder berm offshore of South Padre Island.

The project was originally proposed as a federal channel improvement project.  The applicant is seeking a Department of Army Permit to conduct the work evaluated in the BIH Channel Improvement Project Final Integrated Feasibility Report, dated July 2014.  This would allow the applicant to conduct the initial deepening of the channel with private (non-federal) funds.  The Corps may elect to enter into an Assumption of Maintenance agreement at some point, after initial work is completed.
