Mission

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' navigation mission is to provide safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally sustainable waterborne transportation systems (channels, harbors, and waterways) for movement of commerce, national security needs, and recreation.  The operation and maintenance of these channels, harbors and waterways requires a substantial amount of dredging.

Reasons for Dredging:

  • Providing reliable and safe navigation channels for ships, including work improvements and deepening as ships get larger and larger
  • Building and maintaining water-based infrastructure, i.e. removal of silt to allow construction
  • Removing contaminated material in remediation projects
