Wallisville Lake Project

Welcome to the Wallisville Lake Project of the US Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District.  Check out all the portions of our site for information about the Project and for links to our partners and other useful sites.  

Programs: Rangers are available to do interpretive programs for schools, civic groups, and other organizations on a variety of topics, such as water safety, life jacket usage, boating safety, navigation locks, salt water barriers, and information about the Wallisville Lake Project.  We can come to you or you can come to our Visitor Center at the Wallisville Project Office.  Please call us at 409-389-2285 to schedule your program.  Please give us at least 3 weeks notice so we can have the time necessary to put together a high quality program for your group.  If your school, civic group, or organization would like a hands-on field lab experience on the Trinity River and Trinity Bay, please contact our partner the Waterborne Education Center at 409-267-3547 and/or check their website at: http://www.txwaterborne.org/home.htm .  For more information about events and calendared activities across the Galveston District see the Community Outreach section of the Public Affairs page on the Galveston District homepage at http://www.swg.usace.army.mil/ .

Events: The Wallisville Lake Project serves as the National Public Lands Day site for the US Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District.  Each year in September volunteers and staff go out on the Trinity River and pick up debris that has floated downstream onto the Project or that careless boaters have left behind them.  If you’d like to help this cleanup effort, call and/or come by the Visitor Center at the Project Office, watch for our news article in local newspapers, or check the National Public Lands Day website at: http://www.npld.com/ .  Since Chambers County is home for so many alligators and the Project is a pretty sizable chunk of the alligator country in the county, we definitely enjoy participating in the annual Texas Gatorfest in Anahuac.  The Trinity River Island Recreation Area is a rest stop on the Gatorfest Bike Race and Rangers staff a booth in the Education Tent at the Festival site in Ft. Partnering: The Wallisville Lake Project has formal partnership agreements with several entities including the Trinity River Authority, Chambers-Liberty Navigation District, the City of Houston, the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, Houston Wilderness, and the Waterborne Education Center.  Partnership agreements help us as a Federal agency work more effectively with local communities and neighbors in everything from wildlife protection and habitat improvement to recreational facility enhancements and customer service.  We are always open to new partnering opportunities.  See the Partners tab of the Natural Resources Management Gateway at http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/ for information on partnerships.  For information on how your group or organization can become a partner with the Project to get the job done contact a Park Ranger at 409-389-2285 or come by the Visitor Center at the Project Office.

Volunteering: National Public Lands Day is the biggest volunteering effort put forth on the Wallisville Project.  Each year one hundred or more volunteers put in as many as 800 hours of their time helping clean up debris and trash from Project lands and waters.  This year NPLD is on Saturday the 30^th of September.  We’ll get together at about 8:00 AM and work until lunch time when we’ll take a break for a hot dog feast.  Then if more needs to be done we’ll go back out for more pickups.  Make your plans now to come be a part of this nationwide effort to care for our public lands.  You’ll feel better for it!  For information on NPLD and other volunteering opportunities at the Project contact a Park Ranger at 409-389-2285 or come by the Visitor Center at the Project Office.
