Public Affairs - Extension on Bayport Comments

Comment period extended 30 days on Bayport draft EIS

The comment period on the draft Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Bayport Container Terminal has been extended thirty days according to Col. Leonard D. Waterworth, commander and district engineer of Galveston District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

"This allows the public additional time to study the draft of the very complex Environmental Impact Statement on this project. We have received a substantial number of requests for a time extension and, considering also that the holidays were in the middle of the comment period, the decision has been made to extend the comment period by 30 days ," said Waterworth. Public comments will continue to be accepted and included in the official record if they are postmarked on or before March 13, 2002. The comment period had been scheduled to close on February 11.

Public interest in the Bayport Container Terminal project has been very high. Between 3 and 4 thousand persons attended the public hearing held recently at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

A hard copy of the executive summary or a CD containing the entire six-volume tract may be obtained free by calling the Corps in Galveston , phone (409) 766-6340. For a hard copy of the entire draft EIS, a charge of $190.86 to cover the cost of printing is being made. To arrange to receive the hard copy of the report, call (713) 914-6480.

Hard copies of the document may also be seen at local public libraries.
