BAYPORT HEARING BRINGS IN BETWEEN 3 TO 4 THOUSAND PEOPLE
"We were extremely pleased with the large turn
out for last night's public workshop and hearing on the Bayport container
and cruise terminals," stated Col. Leonard Waterworth, District
Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, Galveston District.
Between three and four thousand elected
officials, members of the community, longshoremen and environmentally
concerned citizens attended the event held in the George Brown Convention
Center. The workshop, which started at 5:00 p.m., provided exhibits of the
port authority's proposed terminal and gave people the opportunity to ask
questions concerning the Draft Environmental Impact Statement recently
published by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The public hearing followed the workshop,
starting at 7:30 and continued past midnight. Over 100 people told of
their views and concerns.
"Many significant points were brought up last night," commented
Waterworth. "We will compile all the written comments along with the
transcript of last night's event and study each situation," he added.
The public has until February 11 to send in any
additional comments to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Attn: Fred
Anthamatten,
P.O. Box 1229, Galveston, Texas 77553. Information can also be attained at
our web site for this issue.
