The conventions main theme, "Freedom Under Fire" was to work at increasing public awareness of the need for election reform and many other issues, all to ensure that every citizen enjoys the right to freedom and justice.
The Galveston and Fort Worth Corps of Engineers attended the conference under the Greater Houston Safe Kids Water Safety Coalition. A display was set up and water safety information handed out to the public. On Saturday over 300 pre-packaged water safety packages were handed out. Also, demonstrations of the importance of wearing your life jackets were preformed. Jackets were available for the public to view and try on.
Every branch of U.S. military, Navy, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Air Force, were in attendance with wonderful display booths. This convention was a wonderful opportunity for the Corps of Engineers to present a positive image to the public with our water safety messages. Individuals in attendance for Sunday July 7, 2002 were Kristine Brown, Helene Kieslich, Madeline Morgan (Safety & Occupational Health Chief, SWF), Emmitt Attaway (Park Ranger, Lake Somerville SWF). Susan Akers-Hirtz of Texas Children's Hospital, Child Injury Prevention Center is the local Safe Kids representative.
