Dredge moving into area near Neches Salt Water Barrier

GALVESTON -- Dredging operations are scheduled to start at the Neches River Salt Water Barrier site near Beaumont on March 4 and boaters are warned to be aware of the presence of the dredge and all boater safety procedures associated with its operations. The dredge is already at the site, setting up.

The salt water barrier project is located at the Neches River mile 29.7, approximately 8 miles north of the freeway (I-10) bridge.

The dredging operation will be confined to the west bank of the river for a distance of 1,800 feet south of the structure and 1,300 feet north of the structure. The maximum encroachment on the existing channel will be 250 feet on the south channel.

Dredging will be on a 24-hour per day basis, seven days per week and will last approximately four months.

To be safe, boaters should give dredging activities as much clearance as possible, especially at night. Hazards near dredges include loose and partially submerged objects such as drill pipe and flanges, extra anchor balls, and the ever present ancillary assortment of work boats, crew boats, tow boats, tug boats, barges and floating crew quarters.
