Laguna Madre Seagrass DataThe Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for maintaining the Laguna Madre portion of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) was completed in September 2003. In the FEIS, the Galveston District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, (District) agreed to monitor seagrass growth and coverage in the Laguna Madre. The monitoring will be achieved by taking aerial photographs along the length of the GIWW each year. Since these photographs provide a valuable record of seagrass coverage in the Laguna Madre, the District is making them available to State and Federal resource agencies and the public for their use. Data is not available for 2007 due to the lack of favorable environmental conditions required for acquiring useable imagery. Data is also not available for 2010 due to contracting issues which prevented imagery from being obtained. The files presented for each year's data collection can be viewed directly or downloaded by the user for further manipulation. The user will need Microsoft excel to read the seagrass coverage classification data and Adobe Acrobat Reader to read the report summarizing the information. A set of maps and a report (year 2004), in pdf format, are provided for immediate viewing or may be downloaded as a group (maps.zip) for later use. The shape files (seagrass.zip) will require the user to have ArcView or ArcGIS to open and view the files or to manipulate the data. These files will be zipped so that they can be downloaded as one package for use. The reader may contact Mark Graves at (601) 634-2557 for more information on the GIS manipulation and interpretation.
