Full Public Notice    Project Plans    Mitigation Plan

The applicant proposes to construct a new U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge 1,000 feet west of the currently existing U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi, Texas.  This would include a new bridge main span, new approaches and new location for roadways and frontage roads, and a reconstructed interchange at I-37 and the Crosstown Expressway, including four direct connector ramps.  This would have three 12-foot lanes in each direction with a median barrier and 12-foot inside and 10-foot outside shoulders.  It will also include a 10-foot bicycle and pedestrian shared use path on the main span of the bridge and the bridge approaches.  Materials for construction will include steel for the main bridge span over the Corpus Christi Ship Channel (CCSC) with concrete supports, concrete for elevated structures on main lanes, direct connector ramps, and asphalt for frontage roads.  The new bridge will have a 205-foot clearance over the channel, a south tower footing 174 feet long by 64 feet wide, and 332 feet thick, and twelve 12-foot-diameter drill shafts.  Dolphins will be 60 feet (plus 10 feet for temporary cofferdam).  Temporary and permanent impacts include cofferdams for the dewatering and placement of the footings, construction of both northbound and southbound frontage roads, connections of frontage roads to other streets, and both the south and north approaches of U.S. 181 to the main bridge span.  There will be no associated dredged material for the construction of the footings.  Total temporary impacts to waters of the U.S. are 0.87 acres and total permanent impacts to waters of the U.S. are 1.53 acres.
