Major Ian P. O’Sullivan was commissioned in the United States Army in May 2006. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Geospatial Information Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and a Master of Science in Geological Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) as well as the Engineer Officer Captain’s Career Course and Basic Course.
O’Sullivan assumed his role as the Galveston District Deputy Commander on August 1st, 2020. His previous assignments include: Platoon Leader and Executive Officer, Easy Company, 2-12 Cavalry Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; Battalion Operations Officer, 30th Engineer Battalion and Commander, 618th Engineer Support Company (Airborne), 307th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
After company command, O’Sullivan was assigned as the Engineer Captains Assignment Officer at Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he was responsible for career management of the Engineer Regiment’s Captains. He then assumed duties as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations (DCG-CEO) at USACE Headquarters, Washington D.C. In this capacity he supported the deputy commanding general in the execution of his duties as the senior officer responsible for USACE Civil Works and Emergency Operations programs.
Following his time in Washington D.C., and after completion of CGSC, O’Sullivan was assigned to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, with the 4th Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Airborne). He then served as the Chief of Current Operations for the brigade and as the Battalion Executive Officer for the 6th Brigade Engineer Battalion (Airborne). He was then selected as the Brigade Executive Officer for the Arctic Support Command (Provisional) where he served prior to assignment in Galveston District.
His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal (4); Army Commendation Medal (2); Army Achievement Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Combat Action Badge; Air Assault Badge; Senior Parachutist Badge; Sapper Tab; and the Bronze Order of the DeFleury Medal.
