U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Southwestern Division (SWD) Acting Commander, Col. James "Brooks" Schultze, center, and USACE Galveston District Commander, Col. Rhett A. Blackmon, second from right, speak with Brownsville Public Utilities Board Resaca Manager, Joe Degollado, during a visit to a Brownsville resaca, March 26, 2024. The commanders toured the resaca to learn more about the unique environment. In 2013, BPUB began the Resaca Restoration Program to improve water circulation, control flood conditions, enhance water quality and support ecological improvements. Resacas are old tributaries of the Rio Grande, which are now used to store and transport water around Brownsville. Resacas also provide habitat for wildlife and the Montezuma Cypress tree, not to be confused with the Bald Cypress.
