The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Galveston District (SWG) hosted it’s Summer 2023 Industry Day at Moody Gardens, Aug. 22, 2023.

More than 300 people attended the Industry Day, including more than 140 small business representatives, larger business representatives, and non-federal government partners from Texas.

The forum began with opening statements from USACE Galveston District Commander, Col. Rhett Blackmon.

“This is about an opportunity to communicate with each other. It’s an opportunity for the Corps to communicate to Industry,” Blackmon said. “It’s an opportunity for communications to occur between some of our non-federal sponsors, local levy districts, ports, etc., to communicate with industry and to communicate with us, and it’s an opportunity for industry to communicate with industry.”

The Industry Day featured several breakout sessions where industry representatives could speak one on one with USACE and other government representatives to increase understanding of contracting requirements.

USACE representatives also provided program updates for Coastal Texas projects.

Elizabeth Fiocchi, USACE-SWG Programs Branch chief, gave an overview of ongoing construction projects and levels of funding; Belynda Kinman, USACE-SWG Operations Division deputy chief, and Navigation Branch chief, addressed navigation projects and contracts; Carlos Tate, Project Manager, Programs and Project Management Division, USACE-SWG presented on the “Houston Ship Channel (HSC) Segment 3 Project”; Sheri Willey, USACE-SWG, Project Management Branch chief, detailed the Sabine Neches Waterway Channel Improvement Project and Rick Villagomez, USACE-SWG Mega Project Division, Orange County program manager, presented on the “Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay (S2G)” project.

Representatives from academia and government also spoke to industry leaders; Dennis McIntosh, Univ. of Houston APEX Accelerator procurement advisor gave attendees information on market research and Ida Benson, Business Opportunity Specialist, Small Business Administration (SBA), addressed “Selling to the Federal Government: How to get Started.”

The Industry Day forum helped the Galveston District communicate with contractors some of the requirements for contracting and doing business with the federal government.

Amanda Zawieruszynski, Procurement Analyst, USACE-Southwestern Division (SWD), presented on “Cyber Security NIST Scores” for contractors and Vernon Griffin, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Galveston District, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, presented on Accident Prevention Plans (APPs) for contractors.
