GALVESTON, Texas (February 19, 2020) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District (USACE Galveston) has awarded a contract in the amount of $12,221,180 to Pontchartrain Partners, LLC., for repair of damage to the Texas City Hurricane Flood Protection Project caused by Hurricane Harvey.
"The project will correct erosion damage to the levee and Moses Lake Floodgate inlet area caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017,” said Ryan Schwartzengraber, Emergency Management Specialist with USACE Galveston's Emergency Management Office. “The Texas City Hurricane Flood Protection Project protects 36 square miles of the greater Texas City-La Marque-Hitchcock area and comprises 22 miles of protective works surrounding the Texas City community and petrochemical production plants located there. The repairs will preserve Texas City’s levee system and provide greater flood risk management for the 2020 hurricane season.”
Pontchartrain Partners is scheduled to begin work by February 21 and finish by June 17 this year. The project will require closure of the Moses Lake Floodgate for 60 days starting on February 21, 2020. “The Moses Lake Floodgate closure will limit the flow of water through the floodgate, allowing the safe repair of scouring within the inlet area on the Galveston Bay side,” said Schwartzengraber.
USACE Galveston was established in 1880 as the first USACE district in Texas - originally tasked with overseeing river and harbor improvements. The district is currently responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel (including 250 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft), as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
