GALVESTON, Texas --
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Galveston District awarded an $8,913,362.61 Architect-Engineer (AE) Task Order Sept. 30, to AECOM HDR Galveston JV, for design efforts of the Sabine to Galveston Freeport and Vicinity Coastal Storm Risk Management Project. The AE will provide a 35% design package for all contract areas of the Sabine to Galveston Freeport and Vicinity Coastal Storm Risk Management Project.
"This contract is a major milestone towards awarding our first Construction Contract for the Freeport and Vicinity system in fiscal year 2023," said Galveston District Freeport and Vicinity project officer, Eduardo Irigoyen.
Public law 115-123 known as the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 enacted Feb. 9, 2018 provided funding to construct flood and storm damage reduction projects in States with more than one flood-relation major disaster, such as impacts from Hurricane Harvey in the region.
The $3.9 billion Sabine to Galveston Pass (S2G) Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) system includes six county areas along the Texas Coast (Galveston, Harris, Brazoria, Jefferson, Chambers and Orange, a region home to more than 5 million people. The S2G CSRM Project, including the Freeport and Vicinity system, as well as the Port Arthur and Orange County projects was included in the list of Long Term Disaster Recovery Investment Program projects which would receive funding and the Chief’s Report was signed in December 2017.
The main features of the Freeport and Vicinity Project is a new 74-foot sector gate at Dow Barge Canal and about 13.1 miles of levee raises from the existing earthen levee system and construct or reconstruct approximately 5.5 miles of floodwall, improving approximately 43% of the existing 43-mile system.
USACE Galveston District is partnering with the Velasco Drainage District to raise, construct or reconstruct the existing earthen levee and floodwall Coastal Storm Risk Management System in Freeport and Vicinity.
