GALVESTON, Texas (May 3, 2013) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District completed the $39.9 million design-build U.S. Border Patrol Station project in Kingsville, Texas, and will celebrate this milestone with the Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector during a grand opening ceremony  May 8, 2013.

The approximately 88,000-square-feet facility is built on nearly 63 acres in accordance with LEED Silver standards, and will support the work of more than 300 Border Patrol agents in South Texas.

“The new facility will magnify our ability to secure our nation’s borders,” said Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa. “The Border Patrol has experienced unprecedented growth since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. This new station will provide adequate space for continued expansion and the facilities necessary to increase our effectiveness in preventing terrorists, illegal immigrants and narcotics from progressing further into the United States.”

The facility includes a 50,000-square-feet station, a 28,000-square-feet vehicle maintenance facility, an 8,400-square-feet warehouse, a 10,000-square-feet impound lot, 3,600 square feet of kennel space, a vehicle fueling area and a four-bay vehicle washing station.

“The USACE Galveston District provides quality planning, design and construction services to federal agencies, adapting to changing needs, practices and priorities to achieve sustainability in everything we do, while assisting organizations in executing their missions in support of our nation,” said Col. Christopher W. Sallese, USACE Galveston District commander. “We’re proud the facility has achieved LEED certification, which indicates the Kingsville Border Patrol Station was built to improve energy savings, water efficiency and indoor environmental quality as well as to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”

The Kingsville Station’s area of responsibility encompasses nearly 2,000 square miles of Kenedy and Kleberg counties. The station’s primary responsibility is the operation of the Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Highway 77 North in Sarita, Texas. Prior to the construction of the new station, the facility was located on the Naval Air Station in Kingsville and was approximately 13,000 square feet.

With its rich heritage in Texas history, the USACE Galveston District continues to provide quality planning, design and construction services to local, state and federal agencies, such as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, that either do not have in-house capabilities or are interested in combining their resources with the Corps’ to create a partnership to support various construction projects that serve our nation and our Armed Forces.
