GALVESTON, Texas (April 21, 2015) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District awarded a maintenance dredging contract in the amount of $4,219,500 to Manson Construction Co., for pipeline dredging of the Sabine Pass Channel Reach of the Sabine-Neches Waterway in Jefferson County, Texas, and Cameron Parish, Louisiana.
The contractor is required to remove approximately 1.8 million cubic yards of dredged material from the channel beginning May 2015 with an estimated completion date of September 2015.
“The Corps effectively maintains this reach of the busy Sabine-Neches Waterway in order to allow vessels to carry critical commodities that contribute to the nation’s economic power,” said Paula Rankin Wise, USACE Galveston District project manager. “All dredge material from this contract will be placed in Placement Area 5B, located adjacent to the waterway.”
According to Wise, the SNWW is the 5th largest waterway in the nation and enables the transport of more than 78 million tons of cargo annually to energy, petrochemical and military users.
“This waterway is a major U.S. importer of crude oil, home to refineries that produce 60 percent of the nation’s commercial jet fuel and is the number one commercial military outload port,” said Wise. “It truly serves as a vital link to the state’s and nation’s economies, which is why it is critical that we keep these channels open for commercial waterborne traffic.”
The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
