GALVESTON, Texas
(March 15, 2016) – The
first impacts to the hike and bike trail system associated with U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers Galveston District’s Addicks and Barker Dam Safety Construction
Project will begin April 1, 2016 with the temporary closure of the hike and
bike trail located on the downstream side of the dam at the water control
structure, until work is complete in the spring of 2019. The temporary closure
will also include the gravel maintenance road atop of Addicks Dam.
“These
closures are necessary to facilitate the construction of a new water control
structure at Addicks Dam, 400 feet to the west of the existing structure, and
to ensure public safety in and around the construction area for the duration of
the construction," said John Long, resident engineer overseeing the
construction of the dam safety improvements.
District
personnel coordinated the trail closure with Harris County Precinct 3 staff,
the operator of the trail, who will be erecting signs at critical locations to
notify the public that the trail is closed.
"We
ask that the public respect these closures as well as signs and fences
restricting access to other locations around the construction area,” said Long.
“The notifications are there for your safety and the safety of the contractors
working in the area."
According
to Long, additional closures and trail re-routing will be necessary at the Barker
Dam in the near future. Information about the temporary closures will be disseminated
to the public when the dates are determined.
