WALLISVILLE, Texas (Sept. 10, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District’s Wallisville Lake Project Office is now issuing waterfowl hunting permits for the 2014-2015 hunting season.

Waterfowl hunting permits are available free of charge to anyone 17 years of age or older who plans on hunting on federal property.

"If you plan to hunt at the Wallisville Lake Project during waterfowl season you must obtain a permit," said Supervisory Natural Resources Manager Richard Long, USACE Galveston District. "Putting safety first and following safe hunting practices will allow for a great hunting experience and enjoyable season."

According to Long, waterfowl hunting permits help increase education of Corps’ rules and regulations and also provide staff with valuable information, including the amount of community members that access the project’s land so the Corps may provide a more enjoyable experience for future hunting seasons.

With local, state and federal laws enforced on all Corps-managed lands, Long adds that it is every hunter's responsibility to know and understand the rules and regulations before heading to a favorite hunting spot.

“Before hunting, hunters should check with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department concerning state regulations, hunting seasons and bag limits,” said Long.

Located 40 miles east of downtown Houston at the Trinity River and Interstate 10, the Wallisville Lake Project is designed to primarily prevent the intrusion of saltwater up the Trinity River in order to conserve fresh water and to protect fresh water intakes for local municipalities, including the City of Houston.

In addition to protecting the fresh water supply, the project supports navigation of commercial and recreational boats, serves as a water supply, is a favorite recreational destination among Houstonians and supports an array of fish and wildlife habitats.
